Assignment 1

You have been asked by your manager to create a database management system for an online retail store. The retail store has two departments: the receiving department and the shipping department. The receiving department receives customers' orders and notifies the shipping department. The shipping department then processes the orders. You will deliver your working application along with a design document and test results for the final task (Individual Project for Unit 5) in this course. Your final design document will have the following sections:

  • Database Design Life Cycle and Database Creation (Create in Unit 1)
  • ER Diagram (Create in Unit 2)
  • The Logical Model and Normalization (Create in Unit 3)
  • The Microsoft Access Database (Create in Unit 4)
  • The Microsoft Access Application (Create in Unit 5)

In this first week, you will explore a structured design process when creating your database application. You will write a report describing the steps needed to properly create the database. You will also provide an overall description of your database.

You should also take this opportunity to create the template for your entire Individual Project, which is a design document; create a Word document that you will add to for each remaining assignment. The document should follow this format:

  • database design project document
  • Use Word
  • Title page must include the following:
    • Course number and name
    • Project name
    • Student name
    • Faculty name
    • Date
  • Table of contents will consist of the following
    • Section headings (create each heading on a new page)

Update your design document by completing the following section in your document: Database

  • Describe the specific tasks that should be taken at each step in the database development for your database.
  • Give a description of the 3 steps in database creation (including conceptual, logical, and physical data modeling) as they relate to your database.
  • Give a description of your database management system.

Assignment 2

Project Scenario: You have been asked by your manager to create a database management system for an online retail store. The retail store has two departments: the receiving department and the shipping department. The receiving department receives customers' orders and notifies the shipping department. The shipping department then processes the orders. You will deliver your working application along with a design document and test results for the final task (Individual Project for Unit 5) in this course.

In this second week, you will identify the entities, their attributes, and their relationships for your database management system. You will draw an Entity-Relationship Diagram (ERD). Update your report by adding the ERD you create.

The deliverables for this task should include the following:

  • Draw an ER Diagram.
  • Update your design document by adding the ER Diagram. Name this section in your document: ER Diagram.
    • Update the Table of Contents to reflect the new section.
    • Name the document "SE205__IP2.doc."

Assignment 3

Project Scenario: You have been asked by your manager to create a database management system for an online retail store. The retail store has two departments: the receiving department and the shipping department. The receiving department receives customers' orders and notifies the shipping department. The shipping department then processes the orders. You will deliver your working application along with a design document and test results for the final task (Individual Project for Unit 5) in this course.

For the Week 3 Individual Project, convert your ERD that you created in the Unit 2 IP into a Logical Data Model that is in third normal form (3NF). The deliverables for this task are as follows:

  • Logical Data Model analyzed and converted to 3NF
    • You can use the "Design Menu" from Microsoft Access to create the Logical Data Model.
  • Description of how each table meets 1NF, 2NF, and 3NF
    • If you need to remove any issues to move to the next higher normal form (NF), describe what the issue is and how you resolved it.
  • Properly identified all primary (use solid underlines) and foreign keys (use dotted underlines)
  • Updated design document by adding the normalized Logical Data Model and normalization discussion
    • Name this section in your document: The Logical Model and Normalization.
    • Update the Table of Contents to reflect the new section.
    • Name the document "SE205__IP3.doc."

Assignment 4

Project Scenario: You have been asked by your manager to create a database management system for an online retail store. The retail store has two departments: the receiving department and the shipping department. The receiving department receives customers' orders and notifies the shipping department. The shipping department then processes the orders. You will deliver your working application along with a design document and test results for the final task (Individual Project for Unit 5) in this course.

At this point, you have constructed your data model, and it meets the definition of Third Normal Form. The next step of the project is to create the database and table structures in Microsoft Access.

Using Microsoft Access, create the tables and relationships defined in your data model. Your Microsoft Access Database at this point should include the following:

  • The tables as defined in your Entity-Relationship Diagram (ERD)
  • The relationships between the tables
  • 3 defined queries.
    • 1 of the queries needs to be created to show the data from the many-to-many relationship (or include 3 tables) originally identified from the initial requirements.
  • A screenshot of the ERD and the queries

Add the screenshots to the section in your template titled: The Microsoft Access Database. Update the following:

  • Update the Table of Contents to reflect the new section.
  • Name the document "SE205_< First and Last Name>_IP4.doc."
  • Submit the document and the Microsoft Access database file for grading

Final Phase

You have completed the database design for the solution of the new database you selected in Week 1 in Microsoft Access. The final step is to submit the database for implementation. After you have created the remaining pieces needed for the application, submit your Microsoft Access database file for final review.

The final application (and submission) should include the following in the Microsoft Access database:

  • The tables and relationships created in the Week 4 IP
  • The 3 queries created in the Week 4 IP
  • 1 menu
  • 2 forms
  • 2 reports (1 for the M:M relationship query)

Add screenshots of the menu, forms, and reports to the section in your template titled: The Microsoft Access Application. Update the following:

  • Update the Table of Contents to reflect the new section.
  • Name the document "SE205__Final.doc."
  • Submit your database file to the Submission Area.
